Audio description is available of the Alcatraz Island Cellhouse Tour and many of the parks exhibits, videos, brochures and publications.

 

Alcatraz Island Cellhouse Tour

You may request an audio described version of the Alcatraz Island Cell House Tour. The audio described tour includes 12 strategically placed tactile markers and a tactile replica of the bar spreader used in the famous 1946 escape attempt.

Exhibits

Audio descriptions of exhibits and waysides throughout the park may be found on the Golden Gate App, available for iOS and Android.

Brochures & Publications

Audio description of the park brochures for Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Woods National Monument and Fort Point National Historic Site is available using the UniDescription app, available for free on iOS and Android devices. Park brochures for more than 50 National Park sites across the country are available through the app.

We highly recommend downloading the app and content prior to visiting the park. WiFi and cellular service are may be limited in various parts of the parks. The UniD app automatically downloads the park content (its text and MP3s) when the app is opened and the particular park file is selected (while online). Once downloaded the content is available in the app, even with no connectivity.

Braille

Many of the park's documents are available in Braille. In addition, many of the tactile models and exhibits listed below feature Braille.

 

Alcatraz Island

The Alcatraz Island Self Guided Tour, the Natural History Brochure, the History of Escape Attempts and a script of the Alcatraz Island Cellhouse Tour are all available in Braille. These documents are available upon request at the Ranger Information Station located on the Alcatraz Island dock.

Fort Point

The Fort Point Brochure is available in Braille. This brochure also contains a tactile map that describes the layout of the Fort. It is available from staff at Fort Point upon request.

Muir Woods

The Muir Woods Brochure is available in Braille. This brochure also includes a small tactile trail map. It is is available upon request at the Muir Woods Visitor Center.

Marin Headlands

The Marin Headlands features two cell phone tours. The scripts of both the Point Bonita Lighthouse Tour and the Fort Baker Tour are available in Braille. These documents are available upon request, please call 415-331-1540.

At Golden Gate National Recreation Area we are working to offer all of our brochures and publications in Large Print. You can download our existing Large Print brochures here. We will post updates of additional Brochures as they are redesigned. Additionally digital versions of all of our publications can be viewed using a screen magnifier.

Alcatraz Island Large Print Publications

The script of the Cell House Tour is available in Large Print. There is also a Large Print version of the Self Guide. You may request a copy of these documents at the Ranger Information Station which is located on the Alcatraz Island dock.

Tactile Exhibits, Maps and Models

The are numerous opportunities at sites throughout Golden Gate to get in touch with the park. Aditionally all ranger and docent programs strive to engage multiple senses and learning styles, and they often include audio components and/or tactile objects.

 

Nike Missile Site

Many of the exhibits on display at the Nike Missile Site are tactile, including scale replicas of both Nike Ajax and Hercules missiles. Find out more about accessible features at the Nike Missile Site.

Marin Headlands

Located off of Field Rd. is a large tactile model of the Marin Headlands. The tactile model is made of concrete and contains Braille labels. Find out more about accessible features within the Marin Headlands.

Fort Point

Located on each level of Fort Point, near the stairwells, are raised tactile orientation maps. Find out more about accessible features within Fort Point.

Alcatraz Island

Located on Pier 33, there is a tactile model of both Pier 33 and Alcatraz Island. In the Alcatraz Island Cell House there is a tactile replica of the bar spreader used in the famous escape. This tactile exhibit is part of the Cell House audio described tour which includes several tactile markers placed throughout the Cell House. Find out more about accessible features at Alcatraz.

Lands End

Located outside of the new Lands End Lookout Visitor Center is a large tactile model of Lands End and its surrounding landscape. The tactile model is made of concrete and contains Braille labels. Find out more about accessible features at Lands End.

Muir Woods

Located in the Muir Woods entrance plaza is a a large tactile model of Muir Woods and its surrounding watershed. The tactile model is made of brass and contains Braille labels. Find out more about accessible features at Muir Woods.

Muir Beach
