Whitman Mission NHS rangers create their own original tours and programs that span a variety of themes and topics. If you are interested in a ranger program while visiting, check the Park Calendar or the park's social media for updates on when programs will be held. Below are examples of some ranger programs that are held at Whitman Mission NHS.
Ranger on the Mission GroundsThis walking tour takes place on a paved path that winds about 1/3 mile through the historic location of the mission. The ranger will lead the group through the history of this area before, during and after the Whitman's time among the Cayuse. Topics will vary from ranger to ranger, but they will often include the Cayuse culture and history, the mission site and buildings, the impacts of the Oregon Trail immigration and the aftermath of the attack on the mission.Tipi ProgramThis program is fun for visitors of all ages and is a favorite for families and children. During a tipi program, the ranger explains the use of a tipi as a home for the Cayuse and other Columbia River Plateau Tribes and how this structure was advantageous for those who used them. While explaining some of the key features, rangers will invite visitors to participate in the process. Visitors will help with the construction of the tipi by raising poles, attaching canvas and staking down the tipi when it's finished.Ranger on the HillThis walking program follows a paved path up a steep hill for about 1/2 mile roundtrip. The program goes past the graves of the Whitmans and other graves of those who died at the mission before and during the attack in 1847. From there, the program goes to the top of the hill overlooking Whitman Mission NHS and the surrounding area. Topics for this program often include the general history of the site, monuments and memorialization, the aftermath of the attack at the mission, the creation of the Whitman Mission National Historic Site and more. |
