Thing to Do
Wildlife Watching - Government Island

NPS | Nicole Phillips
Located in Stafford, VA, this section of trail offers a boardwalk through a freshwater wetland and marsh habitat and a loop around a forested island. There are abundant opportunities for bird watching and wildlife viewing all times of year.
Starting from the parking lot, take the path into the trees. This path will eventually lead to a boardwalk over water. From the boardwalk, spot muskrats, catfish, kildeer, the elusive yellow-crowned night heron, or even a bald eagle circling above.
The boardwalk leads to a forested trail taking you in a circle around the island. In this wooded habitat, look out for garter snakes, Carolina Chickadees, and starting in May the migration of warblers like the northern parula and the prothonotary warbler.
From the parking lot, take the path into the trees, heading down a shaded path that leads to a boardwalk.
