Ranger-Led "Footsteps" Tour
Join a Ranger on guided walk to the Dungeness Historic Area. Learn about the people that lived here and the events that shaped the island's history. The human habitation of the Dungeness area spans thousands of years. The Timucuan Indians, Spanish missionaries, British soldiers, planters and enslaved Africans, and wealthy industrialists all called the south end of Cumberland Island home.
Tours are offered on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays when staff is available, and begin at the Dungeness dock at 10:00 AM and 12:45 PM shortly after the ferry docks on the island. Each tour lasts about 1 hour and covers about 1 mile in distance. Ask if tours will be offered on the day of your visit. The park line is 912-882-4336. If a tour is not being offered, there is a self-guided cell phone tour of the Dungeness area.
There are two restrooms and places to fill water bottles along the route. The tour route does not make a loop. Factor in the distance back to the dock area or feel free to explore additional areas on your own when the tour concludes.
