Learn about the Johnstown Flood in the Visitor Center

Winter Hours of Operation
The Visitor Center is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays and open Fridays through Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
Visitors will learn about the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889.
Large windows on the upper level give a view of the remains of the South Fork Dam and empty lakebed. The Victor Heiser exhibit gives a survivor's account of the flood. Exhibits explain the South Fork Dam, its construction, and the day the dam gave way. The victims of the Johnstown Flood are listed and a replica morgue book is on display. An original George Hetzel painting that once was on in the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club Club House is on display. The upper level also contains the park bookstore.
The movie theater shows the film "Black Friday" at :15 past the hour (9:15, 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 1:15, 2:15, 3:15, and 4:15). The presentation is 35 minutes long. "Black Friday" is rated PG (parental guidance suggested). The film contains captions. A transcript of the film is available at the Visitor Center desk.
A fiber optic map on the lower level shows the path of the flood from the dam to Johnstown. Large photos from the time period are on display. A screen with photos from the 1880s show what it was like when the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club owned the lake and had a Club House and cottages along the shoreline. Exhibit panels talk about the activities and members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, recovery and more!
A set of doors leads outside to additional exhibit panels that give information about the South Fork Dam. Restrooms are available on the lower level.
A walkway leads to the Lake View House. The structure was once owned by South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club president, Colonel Elias J. Unger. The Lake View House is closed to the public and serves as park offices.
