Take the 2.5-mile ascent to a large, flat topped rock formation overlooking the Youghiogheny River valley. This elevated perch offers unparalleled views of a dramatic geological feature: a massive cleft in Laurel Ridge where the river navigates around a broad landform known locally as the Flats.

Thousand foot, 2.5-mile ascent to an overlook of the Youghiogheny River valley offering a view of the Sugarloaf Knob and the gorges cutting into the ridge from side streams. Going back down the mountain will bring the hike up to 5 miles.

This is a strenuous hike with a large elevation change, loose rocks, and exposed roots. The descent from the overlook, though downhill, can cause strain on the ankles. People should be prepared to take frequent rests and should make sure they are properly stocked with water and salty snacks.
