Discovering John Day Fossil Beds
Explore! This place is a window where we can take part in a rare view into ancient Oregon. Looking through geologic and fossil records we can go back millions of years in time and find very different places than we see today.
Discover! You will discover an ancient world millions of years after dinosaurs roamed the earth. An age filled with lumbering rhinos and stalking saber-tooths.
Imagine! Today, scientific discoveries happen right in front of you, as paleontologists unearth fossils never seen by human eyes.
Become a Junior Ranger
We have Jr. / Sr. Ranger books and Jr. Paleontology books available at the Thomas Condon Visitor Center. Just ask a ranger for a booklet once you arrive and they will help get you started. You can also find a digital copy on our website.
To earn a badge with a Junior Ranger book, complete the fun-filled activities and return your completed book to a ranger at the visitor center desk, take the Junior Ranger pledge, and recive your badge!
Don't have enough time to return your book to the visitor center? No problem! Send your book back to the park when you complete it. A ranger will review it and mail the book back to you with a wooden badge.
