NPS Photo/J. Wei
The two primary roads in the park, Crater Rim Drive and Chain of Craters Road, travel through a variety of environments and cultural landscapes. Both roads are paved and do not require four-wheel drive.
Tours that outline sights and stops along the way are available in the NPS smartphone app and also on the park website.
Crater Rim Drive from Uēkahuna to the Devastation Trailhead parking lot is about 5.6 miles (9.0 km) one-way, taking about 20 minutes to drive without any stops.
Chain of Craters Road from Devastation Trailhead to to Hōlei Sea Arch is about 18.7 miles (30 km) one-way, taking about 30 minutes to drive without any stops.
Both roads can be driven in 2 hours roundtrip, though significantly more time is recommended to take in the scenery and history of this dynamic, ever-changing landscape.
