Plant Succession: A Journey Through Time

Grade Level:
Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
Subject:
Science

Join us as we explore Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve
to learn more about the process of ecological succession! Through this distance learning program, students will learn how land can progress through a variety of ecological conditions in response to disturbance and take a closer look at how Glacier Bay has changed in the years following the retreat of glaciers.

Format

  1. The ranger will introduce a brief history of Glacier Bay National Park.

  2. Students will learn about how ecosystems progress through distinct successional stages.

  3. Students will observe a variety of plants and animals characteristic of different successional stages.

Objectives

By the end of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Describe ecological succession.

  2. Identify one species of early, mid, and late successional plant.

  3. List three examples of natural or human-caused ecological disturbance.
