Science

Overview

This a post-visit activity to be conducted after students attend the ranger-led beaver hike at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Lodges are beaver homes and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a great place for a beaver to live. Have your students make a for sale flyer for a beaver home at Sleeping Bear.

Objective(s)

After completing this post-visit activity, students will be able to:

  • explain the purpose of a beaver lodge and identify it as a type of shelter
  • list materials beavers use to construct their lodges
  • understand where lodges are located
  • draw a picture of the inside and the outside of a beaver lodge

Procedure

After visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and attending the ranger-led beaver hike, you can complete this post-visit activity in order to reinforce and/or assess what the students have learned.

Explain that students will be creating a for-sale flyer for a beaver lodge. They will be drawing/coloring a picture of the inside and outside of the lodge, explaining the purpose of the lodge, describing the materials used to construct the lodge, and stating where the lodge is located.  A word bank is provided.

Students can use this template to create their flyer or the teacher may elect to have students design their own templates.

Materials

This template and word bank can be used to complete the activity.
