Subject:
Literacy and Language Arts

Overview

In this activity, students compare their service site before and after completing their project using photos and art.

Objective(s)

Students will understand the positive impacts their work had on local wildlife and environment.

Materials

 Drawing paper, coloring materials

Procedure

Have class review before and after photos or videos of their work site. Discuss accomplishments and challenges.

Give students a sheet of drawing paper and coloring materials. Instruct students to divide their paper in half width-wise.

On the left half of the paper, have students draw their worksite before they completed their service learning project.

On the right half of the paper, have students draw their worksite after they completed their service learning project.

Assessment

On the backside of their paper, students list plants, animals and people that benefit from the work they completed and explain why in 1-2 sentences.

Extensions

Teacher leads a discussion, asking students what other activities they, as well as the public, participate in while visiting the park. What impacts do these people and activities have on the local plants and animals and how can they be reduced?
