Park Preparation Plans

National Park Service (NPS) managers are responsible for preserving and protecting public lands and, in some instances, surrounding waters and submerged lands. When an oil discharge or release of hazardous substances impacts or threatens to impact resources managed by the National Park Service several resources are at risk. These resources may include: lands, historic structures, cultural resources, estuarine wetlands, coastal habitat, wildlife refuge areas and the public use areas therein.

The purpose of the park preparation plans is to provide an initial guide to federal/state/local responders when an oil discharge or release of hazardous substances impacts or threatens to impact resources managed by the National Park Service (NPS). The threatened resources within these units may include: lands, historic structures, cultural resources, estuarine wetlands, coastal habitat, wildlife refuge areas and the public use areas therein. These resources may be damaged directly by oil and/or indirectly by the impacts of on-shore clean-up activities.

The National Park Service Spill Response Team has identified sites within each unit that have the most sensitive natural and cultural resources and then assigns them a priority protection status. This status and more can be found within the preparation plan for each park below.

The full plan may be accessed by Department of the Interior (DOI) Bureau staff via the Spill Response Intranet Site. Non-DOI staff may contact the Spill Response Coordinator to receive a copy of a plan.
