HISTORY
Ernest F. Coe was born on March 21, 1867, in New Haven, Connecticut. He completed course work in the Fine Arts Department at Yale University from 1885 to 1887 and later established a practice as a landscape architect in New Haven. In 1925, he and his family moved to Coconut Grove, Florida where he established a private landscape design practice for a few years.
Once in Florida, Coe met with members of the Florida Society of Natural History and was introduced to the Everglades. He undertook efforts to create a national park by conducting many trips to the region, drawing maps and developing boundaries to propose for inclusion in a new Everglades National Park. During 1928, Coe raised his park establishment campaign to the National Park Service (NPS) Director Stephen Mather, arguing that the Everglades “would eventually within a very short time become one of the most popular of our national parks.” He developed plans for the formation of the Tropic Everglades National Park Association, which served as the primary lobbying group in the campaign for a national park. The association was organized at a meeting held at the Nautilus Hotel in Miami Beach on December 11, 1928. Dr. David Fairchild was elected president and Ernest Coe served as executive chairman.
On March 1, 1929, President Herbert Hoover directed the NPS to investigate the “desirability and practicability” of establishing a national park in the Everglades. Because the most comfortable time to visit the Everglades is during the winter months, Coe coordinated an inspection trip for early in 1930. Members of the inspection committee included Horace M. Albright, Director, NPS; Arno B. Cammerer, Associate Director, NPS; Elbert E. Burlew, Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Interior; Roger W. Toll, Superintendent, Yellowstone National Park; T. Gilbert Pearson, President, National Association of Audubon Societies; Dr. Hermon C. Bumpus, former director, American Museum of Natural History; Dr. David Fairchild, Everglades National Park Association; Ruth Bryan Owen, US Representative, Florida’s 4th District; and Marjory Stoneman Douglas, journalist and conservationist.
Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur announced on May 19, 1930, that the inspection team had reported that the Everglades area “measured up to the high standards prescribed for national park establishment,” and that he would recommend that Congress authorize the park project. The Tropic Everglades National Park Association changed its name to become the Everglades National Park Association by June 30, 1932.
Coe’s dedication and involvement in the effort to establish Everglades National Park prompted Secretary of the Interior Oscar Chapman to state, "Ernest Coe's many years of effective and unselfish efforts to save the Everglades earned him a place among the immortals of the National Park movement." Coe passed away on January 1, 1951, at age 84.
