Lyons Ranches Historic District
California, Reference number: 100002212
Areas of Significance: Agriculture, Architecture, Exploration/Settlement, Ethnic Heritage-Native American
Period of Significance: 1868-1959

Locally significant under National Register Criteria A and C. the 5,660-acre district, set within the open prairie and oak woodlands of the Redwood Creek watershed, reflects the era of peak sheep ranching in the Bald Hills area from 1869 to 1959. Associated with the prominent Lyons family--pioneering settler Jonathan and his Native American (Hupa) wife Amelia, his sons Antonio, William, Anderson, Sherman, and grandson Gene--the extant ranch landscape retains many natural features (open prairies), patterns of spacial organization, and working ranch buildings typical of historic period sheep ranching. The extant resources represent a rapidly disappearing regional property type and cultural landscape.

California, Reference number: 100002147
Areas of Significance: Agriculture, Architecture, Commerce
Period of Significance: 1857-1956

Locally significant under National Register Criteria A and C, the 22,237-acre agricultural landscape is composed of 17 (formerly private) farmsteads operated as dairy ranches between 1857 and 1956. The documentation provides snapshot descriptions for each of the 17 ranches as well as looking at the broader landscape. The extant historic farming landscape retains many natural features (open prairies, wooded drainages), patterns of spacial organization, and working diary buildings typical of the evolving character of historic period dairy ranching during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The extant resources represent a rapidly disappearing regional property type and cultural landscape.
