Amending a Grant

What is an Amendment?

An amendment, also called a modification, is a change to your awarded grant. Since your grant is essentially a contract, changes to it must be recorded.

When is an Amendment Necessary?

The terms and conditions of your grant and 2 CFR 200 define when and how an award may be amended.

The most common reasons an award is amended are:
  • change in key personnel
  • change in budget
  • change in period of performance

How do I Request an Amendment?

Amendments may be requested in GrantSolutions or by email to your grant manager. Any request for an amendment should include a list of requested changes as well as a very brief justification for the change.

Requesting an Amendment in GrantSolutions

The general steps below to request an amendment in GrantSolutions are current as of September 7, 2021, but may change as upgrades are made to GrantSolutions. Begin by logging in to GrantSolutions and switching from the "new experience" mode to the "classic" mode. Once you are viewing GrantSolutions in the "classic" mode, you will see a hyperlink titled "Manage Amendments." If you do not switch to the "classic" mode, an amendments button will still be visible to you; however, when you click on it, an error message will display. Remember, to submit an amendment request, you need to be in the "classic" mode.

Completing Forms & Justifying your Request

Exactly which forms are required will change depending on the type of amendment you are requesting. Most amendments will require you to complete at a minimum a new SF-424 Application for Federal Assistance. You will do this directly within GrantSolutions. Remember to indicate the type of submission (preapplication, application, or changed/corrected application) and type of application (new, continution, revision). Grantees requesting an amendment (modification) will typically select "application" as the type of submission and "revision" as the type of application. If you select "revision," you will also need to select the type of revision that applies. Options will be visible in a menu and include actions like increase duration or increase award. Duration means the period of performance of the award. Award means your grant. For example, if you select "increase duration," then your amendment should include a period of performance adjustment to extend the end date of the grant.
