HFC Innovation

Sometimes a view is so sensitive that a park needs something lower than the classic low profile wayside. In the case of the United States Marine Corps War Memorial, the park wanted to avoid interpretive photobombs blocking Marines’ shined-up shoes (among other things). In an experimental in-house project, the HFC team created a new type of wayside that suits this unique landscape. The waysides stand only 30 inches tall at their peak. They readily blend into hedges, curbsides, and ground slopes. To compensate for the additional reading distance, the panels measure a whopping 72 inches across with larger text. These new panels were made possible by a $5.37 million donation by businessman and philanthropist David M. Rubenstein.

HFC staff include: Jess Liptak, Neil Mackay, David Lenk, Glenn Klaus, Mark Johnson, Don Branch, Diane Liggett, Greg Aylsworth, Christopher Elbich (then at the park), Jim Eynard, Susie Haines, Bruce Kaiser, Eileen Vrom and Megan Williams.
