Fossil Curation and Collections Management

[Site Under Development]

The NPS maintains more than 660,000 paleontological specimens within park museum collections and non-NPS museum repositories. These fossil specimens are curated using professional museum standards as defined in Department of Interior Manual 411, “Identifying and Managing Museum Property.” Fossils within NPS museum collections are managed as accountable property which supports scientific research and public education. Detailed information regarding the standards and guidelines for museum facilities is available upon request.
