Overview
The National Park Service Wildland Fire Key Messages are complementary to the National Interagency Fire Center’s Fire Year Themes and are to be used together.
The National Park Service (NPS) manages all wildfires in parks using various strategies. NPS works collaboratively with partners to achieve important goals for fire safety and prevention.
Fire Response
The NPS actively responds to all fires within park boundaries employing different strategies and tactics to address the unique needs of each incident and works with partner agencies to respond to wildfires outside of parks. The strategies used adjust over time based on the conditions and values at risk.
Safety First
NPS keeps firefighters safe by limiting exposure to risks on the fireline. This is done by:
- Giving them the right tools and resources.
- Investing in wildfire prevention.
- Reducing fuels that exacerbate unwanted or undesirable fire.
The NPS also helps protect people and local communities from wildfires by working together in prevention, response, and recovery.
Air Quality: Big fires can affect air quality. The NPS Air Resources Division shares information to help people and community residents.
Stay Informed: Know before you go. Check for Active Alerts on park websites or on the NPS App. If the park you’re visiting is affected by wildland fire, follow instructions from park staff.
Managing Vegetation
Excess vegetation (called fuels build-up) can make fires worse. The NPS manages fuels build-up by using prescribed fire, mechanical removal, and/or chemical treatment.
Healthy ecosystems often need some fire for plants and animals to thrive. In many places, periodic fire creates diversity for healthy ecosystems for plants and wildlife.
The NPS continuously adapts its fire management based on feedback from stakeholders, science and data to mitigate risks for communities and natural and cultural resources.
Community Help & Education
Everyone can help prevent wildfires. Visitors should follow fire safety guidelines, and homeowners can use resources like Firewise USA® to better prepare for wildfires.
