From: Associate Director, Visitor and Resource Protection /s/ Rick Obernesser
Subject: Implementation of the NPS Structural Fire Strategic Plan, 2017 - 2022
The National Park Service (NPS) Structural Fire Strategic Plan was recently revised under the direction of the Structural Fire Branch with input from throughout the Service via our Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) site. Sixteen comments were received from sources as varied as park safety officers, members of the structural fire training cadre, regional chiefs of maintenance and Denver Service Center leadership. In addition, regional structural fire managers were engaged in plan review and input. All of these comments were replied to and considered for plan incorporation.
This multi-year strategy takes into account the unique and multifaceted mission of the NPS and its responsibilities for structure fire protection. It provides focused guidance to national, regional and park management on all aspects of a comprehensive structural fire program. The strategic plan identifies the four primary goals and objectives, with associated core strategies for the Structural Fire Program emphasizing current and future direction; allows us to measure progress as we move forward; and serves as a guidepost for formulating and implementing decisions related to the program's future direction. The plan is consistent with and subordinate to Director's Order and Reference Manual 58 for Structural Fire Management.
Please ensure wide distribution of this plan to all personnel associated with structural fire activities within your area of responsibility. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact your Regional Structure Fire Program Manager, or our Structural Fire Branch Chief, Brian Johnson at 208-387-5245, or brian johnson@nps.com
