Sublime Resonance15 Photos
Can the process of time be captured? The dynamism of nature rendered in art? How does the essence of place resonate to the artist? These artists abstract their works, juxtaposing meaning and metaphor, going beyond mere beauty. Whether fracturing light or surface, using color to shift perspective or composition to create movement, we are left to ponder the possibilities. During their residencies these artists have blended thought and time, encapsulating the heart of place in works that open the viewers’ minds to new pathways of expression.
Nature's Delicate Balance14 Photos
While contemplating their vast and ecologically complex environments, these artists ask the viewer to think more deeply about their own place in the natural world and to discover their a balance with the wild. Being in residency at such parks as the Florida Everglades National Park or Denali National Park and Preserve, artists have the opportunity to experience the natural world in expansive ways. The medium of art allows them to bring their interpretations of the parks to the world.
Artists conjure the imagination, stir up our senses and transport us through space and time to the mystery of each park’s unique sense of place. As Linda Hogan, a Native American storyteller, writes “There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story”. As artists spend concentrated time in America’s national parks , they pay attention to the stories of each individual place, but also to the dialogue unfolding in their inner lives. Artists talk about the kinds of self discovery manifested in their journeys, a self-awareness and a connection to deep ideas that happens.
Place and Wonder15 Photos
Peering through a microscope, the familiar becomes foreign – the simple … cryptic. Magnification transforms known color, line, and form into abstraction. At times we clearly recognize the landscape; at times it can, with study, be discerned beneath abstraction. It may be a moment of time frozen in pigment, or the mundane elevated to myth. Whether scouring the depths of the landscape or contemplating their place in the world, these artists open our eyes and minds to the possibilities, to marvel at the wonders inherent in our world.
Signature of Place23 Photos
A signature is a distinctive mark, a characteristic unique to each of us. The works in this exhibit provide a glimpse into the distinctiveness of these places, all preserved by the mark of each individual artist. Whether a particular view, the way the light falls across the land or the qualities inherent in the space, these works are reflections of how the artist has experienced the park. Some seek to depict the scenes exactly as they have seen them; others take artistic liberties to present the sense of each place. The bottom line as Paul Murray says, his work is about capturing “the edges of the day”, an objective it seems that all of these artists share.
Sculpted Narratives11 Photos
Whether carved from stone, sculpted in wood and metal, captured on film or formed in clay, the works in Sculpted Narratives share a common purpose – storytelling through art. Each of these artists has been immersed in diverse national p ark settings. Whether the park became the artist’s subject or catalyst for the formation of a new personal vision, these works contain layers of narrative waiting to be discovered.
