Avocational Certification

State archeological societies incorporate non-professional archeologists into excavation teams through avocational certification programs. These programs enable avid amateurs to become certified field archeologists, while professional archeologists get valuable assistance in archeological work.

The availability of certification programs can change from year to year. Contact your State Historic Preservation Office or your state archeological society to learn about available projects.

The Society for American Archaeology supports avocational archeology. SAA works with state and regional archeological societies, known collectively as the Council of Affiliated Societies. Each year the SAA presents an avocational archeologist with the Crabtree Award, a recognition of excellence in avocational archeology. A full list of past awardees is on SAA's website.
