In the fall of 2016, the construction of the brand new Statue of Liberty Museum was announced. When this new museum opens, it will allow millions more visitors to enjoy the Statue of Liberty experience and be inspired by the statue's history and message of freedom and opportunity.
Why Are We Doing This Project?
The Statue of Liberty Museum will address three main components: Accessibility, Education, and Sustainability. Every visitor will have the opportunity to experience meaningful artifacts and discover a deeper understanding of the this National Monument's history. In addition, the museum will create a beautiful, new destination on Liberty Island and enhance the overall visitor educational experience. The new Statue of Liberty Museum will allow for universal access, giving visitors a meaningful experience and deeper understanding of the Statue of Liberty’s history. In addition, it will create a beautiful, new destination on Liberty Island, have a positive impact on the high-volume pedestrian traffic flow and enhance the overall visitor educational experience. The Statue of Liberty Museum represents a unique opportunity for the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation to extend its legacy of environmental and cultural stewardship. Liberty Island is not only an important ecological site in the center of New York Harbor, but also embodies the combined aspirations of local, state, and federal government.

While we are building the new museum, there will be noise and construction activity in the area of the flagpole plaza and adjacent pathways.
When will This Happen?
Work is already underway on the new museum. This project is projected to be completed in 2019.
