The Statue of Liberty museum opened in May 2019 to visitors. Construction commenced in 2016 with the goal of offering visitors a more accessible destination to learn about the history of the Statue of Liberty.
Why did we undertake this project?
The Statue of Liberty Museum addresses three main components: Accessibility, Education, and Sustainability. Every visitor has the opportunity to experience meaningful artifacts and discover a deeper understanding of the this National Monument's history. In addition, the museum created a beautiful, new destination on Liberty Island and enhances the overall visitor educational experience. The museum objects and exhibits were previously housed in the base of the Statue of Liberty. Because of safety and security protocols, only about 20% of visitors have the opportunity to enter the Statue of Liberty's base and pedestal. This meant that 80% of visitors were left with no museum education opportunity. Now, all visitors have access to unique museum objects, a theatre, and close-up views of the Statue of Liberty's original torch. The Statue of Liberty Museum represented a unique opportunity for the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation to extend its legacy of environmental and cultural stewardship.
