San Juan Island NHP and Coast Salish Neighbors Celebrate Shared Heritage
About This Blog
San Juan Island NHP and community members from neighboring Coast Salish Nations joined together on August 25, 2016 to celebrate the 100th Birthday of the National Park Service and to honor our shared heritage on San Juan Island. Members of the Lummi and Saanich (WSANEC) Nations dedicated a Coast Salish totem pole, two storyboards, and two canoes at the historic English Camp Parade Grounds. The Centennial Event reminds us to look towards the future to strengthen relationships and foster future land stewards. The event was celebrated by speeches, singing, dancing, canoe paddling, and birthday cake. There has never been an event like it before in this park's history.
