In celebration of the Centennial of the National Park Service, Sitka National Historical Park invites you to a concert celebrating John Muir, the Scottish born naturalist whose inspirational ideas and words played a key role in the establishment of some of the nation's earliest national parks. The urban chamber music ensemble "Chance" will combine contemporary, classical and Celtic music with Muir's writings to take the listener on a journey spanning his childhood in Scotland, his young life in Wisconsin, and his experiences in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of the western United States. John Muir - University of the Wilderness will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, at the Odess Theatre in Allen Hall. The concert is free and open to the public, but seating is limited to 200 people. Individuals must obtain tickets in person at the Sitka National Historical Park Visitor Center. A maximum of four tickets per person will be distributed. Tickets will be available at the Visitor center until 5:00 p.m. May 22nd; a few tickets may be available at the door on the evening of the event. Please call the visitor center at 907-747-0110 for more information.
Composer/Performers Cheryl Leah and Ed Willet have been collaborating with Thomas Clyde Mitchell since 1994. From 1994 to 2011 the three were an integral part of the summer music festival and touring company, Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua, a company that specialized in the wedding of music, history, and theater. In their time with the festival they played pivotal roles in the production of 5 albums, 3 PBS specials, and over 300 performances. In 2015 they joined forces with violinist Liesel Wilson and with her the Chance ensemble continues to blaze its own trail, bringing an incredible breadth of musical insight and experience to their offering.
