The park will offer special programming highlighting the enslaved people’s courageous escapes to Union lines following the fort’s recapture in 1862. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about post-emancipation life on the Sea Islands and lift their own voices about what freedom and bravery mean to them.
Schedule of Activities:
9:00-5:00 Self-guided African American History tour: pick up a tour map in the Visitor Center and explore on your own. 10:00-4:00 Lift Every Voice Room: Explore the stories of former enslaved people who took refuge on Cockspur and other islands nearby during the Civil War.
