World Migratory Bird Day
Pipestone National Monument announces “World Migratory Bird Day” on May 12, 2018, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. In years past the monument has celebrated international migratory bird day, but this year's celebration has expanded. "They have actually partnered with another organization an combined their efforts, which is pretty cool," said Christopher Langland, Monument Biological Science Technician.
International Migratory Bird Day and World Migratory Bird Day will now work together to celebrate migratory birds twice a year on the second Saturday in May and again in October. The event is open to all ages and is free.
Pipestone National Monument often sees as many as 150 species of birds stay at the monument during migration, with upwards of 200 to 350 spcies overall. In previous years the monumenbt had run the event with the Fish & Widelife service but this year langland will be the event himslf.
We will still do guided hikes, throughout the day, and give out fun prizes. A sunrise hike, when migratory birds are most active, is also offerred via RSVP. To RSVP, call Chris at 507-825-5464 ext 220.
