Oakland joins the National Park Service Centennial celebration when
Laney College architecture students unveil their "national parklet" on campus, Monday April 18, during
National Park Week.
The student designers, park rangers, and officials from Laney College and the National Park Service will cut a ribbon to open the parklet at 10:30AM, followed by tours of the parklet with the designers.
The parklet began as a classroom design studio project last spring. After its unveiling, the parklet will remain open through June in the lobby of the Tower Building on the Laney College campus.
The project is a partnership with the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, a program of the National Park Service that commemorates the Spanish settlement of the Bay Area in 1776, and the
Peralta Hacienda Historical Park in Oakland's Fruitvale District.
The parklet uses multimedia to evoke the landscapes of the 1,200-mile Anza Trail, which connects Mexico and the Bay Area. The parklet also serves as a touchpoint in Oakland for visitors to engage with the national parks of the Bay Area, which include Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park.
"The theme of the National Park Service Centennial is Find Your Park," says Anza Trail park ranger Hale Sargent. "We want people to come to parks, but we also want parks to come to people, and the Laney College students are helping us meet that goal."
