Mountain Howitzer Assembly & Firing
Assembling the Mountain Howitzer
Staff and volunteers in period clothing assemble the mountain howitzer as part of a special program on the park's Parade Ground.
Placing the Barrel
Staff and volunteers in period clothing ensure that the howitzer's barrel is carefully placed on top of the carriage and secured before firing.
Beginning the Drill
Members of the howitzer crew begin the drill to prepare, load, and fire the howitzer.
Ramming Home the Charge
The howitzer's charge is "rammed home" in preparation for firing.
Placing the Friction Primer
The cartridge is placed and pierced through the vent hole, a friction primer is inserted. When pulled, the friction primer is the howitzer's source of ignition.
At the gunner's signal, the howitzer is fired.
