Parks As Classrooms

The Presidio of San Francisco provides Parks as Classroom programs designed to engage students in historic inquiry and environmental science.

Educational Opportunities at Golden Gate National Recreations Area's Parks As Classrooms uses the Understanding by Design framework, and incorporates California Common Core Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies. Our inquiry-based park programs can be timed to introduce concepts, reinforce understanding, or stimulate culminating projects within a teaching unit. Programs are typically structured in three parts: a classroom preparation, a national park field session, and classroom assessments in which students demonstrate what they have learned. Teachers are provided with resources, including program curriculum and supporting materials.

Partner Organizations

The Crissy Field Center, a partnership project of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service, offers multicultural programs that actively engage us with our environments and promote collaborations in building a more sustainable and environmentally just society. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy’s Youth Programs Department serves young people through a variety of park- and community-based programs, including intensive youth leadership programs and partnerships with schools and community groups.

The National Japanese American Historical Society -Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center in the Presidio is the original site of the language school for the Military Intelligence Center during World War II. In addition to its general admission hours, the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center also offers docent-guided group and school tours, which highlight the experience of Japanese American soldiers during World War II.
