Description
In observance of Civil War and Emancipation Day, Richmond’s National Parks are pleased to offer a free walking tour on Sunday, April 2, 2023.
“Abraham Lincoln in Richmond” will follow the footsteps of Lincoln, his son Tad, and a small group of guards as they emerged from the James River in a rowboat on April 4, 1865, less than 48 hours after the Confederate government evacuated and burned its capital city in the closing days of the Civil War.
In a mile long walk from the riverfront to the former Confederate White House, Lincoln saw the smoldering ruins of the city that had been the focal point of four years of war. The president was greeted with jubilation by the formerly enslaved population of Richmond in what became an impromptu celebration of the emancipation that had been secured in the city two days earlier.
Join Park Ranger Nathan Hall as he guides you along the route walked by Lincoln and his party from the James River waterfront, through the 17th Street Market district, past Capitol Square, to the Confederate Executive Mansion at 12th and Clay Streets, and to the Valentine Museum where the statue commemorating Lincoln’s Richmond visit is on view.
The tour route is approximately 2.5 miles round trip, with strenuous uphill topography in the first half of the walk. The tour will start and end at the Richmond Canal Walk, immediately opposite Bottom’s Up Pizza (1700 Dock St, Richmond, VA 23223). Tour begins at 1pm.
Tour is free and no reservations required.
