Description
Night sky and sunset viewing party at Machicomoco State Park. Watch the sunset, peep the waning crescent moon, and learn about historic connections humans have had to the night sky, from navigation to storytelling! Telescopes will be available to view objects in the nights sky! As we watch the sun set, we will learn about how Indigenous people, colonial navigators, and modern scientists use the night sky to find their way in the dark. As darkness falls, we will observe the stars above, note the phase of the moon, and identify planets and other objects that are visible in the sky.
Before the event, we encourage you to download a stargazing app on your mobile device - there are many applications available that allow us to identify constellations, planets, and more using GPS technology!
Meeting location: Machicomoco State Park Interpretive Area; The steps (signage will direct visitors)
Registration: Recommended. Program limited to 30 participants. Register at the Machicomoco park office or by calling at 804-642-2419
Junior Ranger Program:
Youth who participate in the event will receive a Night Explorer Junior Ranger booklet and patch. The National Park Service has developed a Junior Ranger Night Explorer program, encouraging young park visitors to explore the starry side of their national parks.
Children can learn how to find the North Star, write their own creative mythology about the constellations, track the phases of the moon, learn about stars and galaxies, and use all their senses to explore the night environment at a national park.
