Description

Shiloh National Military Park is pleased to announce a new ranger led hike on Saturday, August 26, 2023. Join Ranger Timothy Arnold for Tuttle’s Brigade Hike from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. This hike will trace the movements of Tuttle’s Union Brigade, their actions, and the decisions made by their leaders, during the Battle of Shiloh.

In February 1862, Colonel James Tuttle led his 2nd Iowa Regiment at the Battle of Fort Donelson. The 2nd Iowa was noted for planting the first US flag inside the Confederate earthworks. At Shiloh, Tuttle now led a brigade in General WHL Wallace’s 2nd Division. When Wallace was mortally wounded, Tuttle took temporary command of the division and escaped being captured in the Hornet’s Nest. For his gallantry at Donelson and Shiloh, Tuttle was promoted to brigadier general.

Reservations are required for this hike and may be made by calling the Shiloh Visitor Center at 731-689-5696, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm any day of the week. Participants will meet at Tour Stop #10, the Hornets’ Nest, at 10:00 am. The park recommends that hikers bring drinking water and insect repellent, and wear footwear appropriate for a two-mile hike.
