“Gaines’s Mill and Beyond: The Story of Two Regiments Who Fought Twice on the Same Battlefield.
A Walking tour along the trail at the Gaines’s Mill Battlefield Unit of Richmond National Battlefield Park will explore the experiences of two military units – the 19th Virginia Infantry and the 22nd Massachusetts Infantry – as they faced each other in battle in June 1862, and very closely again on the some of the same ground in June 1864.
Focusing on the individual journeys of these smaller groups of soldiers who fought on the same ground two years apart will allow insight into the community experience of the Civil War and offer the chance to compare & contrast the differences in politics, strategy, tactics, and the individual soldier experience between the 'first' and 'second' battles of Cold Harbor."
