Documentary Presentation: Pilgrimage to Magdalena
The documentary film, Pilgrimage to Magdalena, will be shown on Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. inside the historic mission church at Tumacácori National Historical Park. The screening will be followed by a question and answer and general discussion session, led by members of the Border Community Alliance (BCA). The documentary, created by BCA, was funded in part by grants from the National Park Service’s Southwest Border Resource Protection Program and the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.
In late September of each year, Mexicans, Mexican Americans, Tohono O'odham, Yaqui, Mayo and others commence a journey from within Sonora, Mexico and Southern Arizona to Magdalena de Kino, Sonora. They walk or ride horseback to celebrate the feast days of Saint Francis Xavier and to honor Father Eusebio Kino, the Jesuit priest who founded Tumacácori and many other missions throughout the area in the 17th century. They travel to fulfill a manda (vow) to Saint Francis Xavier, or serve the travelers for the same reason. This tradition of 300+ years is unique in that during the days of the pilgrimage, borders do not exist for the travelers, and people of various cultures mingle to celebrate together. The film Pilgrimage to Magdalena celebrates this wonderful Borderlands tradition and honors its adherents.

There is no charge to attend this presentation, and entrance to the park is free during the program. Border Community Alliance is a non-profit organization based in Tubac, Arizona, with a mission of bridging the border and fostering community through education, collaboration and cultural exchange.
Presentación documental: peregrinación a Magdalena
El video documental titulado Peregrinación a Magdalena será proyectado el domingo 25 de septiembre a las 2:00 p.m. en el interior de la histórica iglesia misionera del Parque Histórico Nacional de Tumacácori. Después de la película habrá una sesión de preguntas y respuestas y discusión general, dirigida por miembros de la Alianza Comunitaria Fronteriza (BCA). El documental, creado por BCA, fue financiado en parte por subvenciones del Programa de Protección de Recursos de la Frontera Sudoeste del Servicio de Parques Nacional y el Sendero Histórico Nacional Juan Bautista de Anza.
A finales de septiembre de cada año, mexicanos, mexicoamericanos, Tohono O'odham, Yaqui, Mayo, y otros comienzan un viaje desde Sonora, México y el sur de Arizona hasta Magdalena de Kino, Sonora. Caminan o montan a caballo para celebrar los días de fiesta de San Francisco Javier y para honrar al Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, el sacerdote jesuita que estableció a Tumacácori y muchas otras misiones en esta zona en el siglo 17. Estas personas viajan para cumplir una manda (voto de fe) a San Francisco Javier, o a ayudar a los viajeros por la misma razón. Esta tradición de 300 años es única ya que durante los días de la peregrinación las fronteras no existen para los viajeros, y la gente de diversas culturas se reúnen para celebrar juntos. La película Peregrinación a Magdalena celebra esta maravillosa tradición fronteriza y honra a sus adherentes.
