Description
In the 19th century, as populations in cities grew, so did their agricultural needs. There was less space in the city, so fewer families were growing their own food, relying on farmers and local markets to supply them with what they needed. In Abraham Lincoln’s 1860’s growing city of Springfield, you could see this shifting need in the residents. Some families had their family gardens, growing their own fruits and vegetables to offset their heavy meat and grain diet, while others frequented the market for these items. But what happens when there are no healthy options in the local markets? What if there are no local markets?
Recognizing the issue of a lack of access to healthy food options for residents who live in locations categorized as food deserts, this event will teach an intro to indoor gardening as one small solution to this larger problem. Hosting the event virtually for public safety, showcasing two videos set to premier on the Lincoln Home National Historic Site social media platforms on the morning of National Public Lands Day.
