Description

This week, the Cultural Demonstration Program presents Ahkima Honyumptewa - Hopi Weaver and Painter, along with Marie Honyumpetwa, Hopi Beader, Tuesday through Thursday, January 30 through February 1, 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm. at Grand Canyon Visitor Center on the South Rim.

Ahkima is a weaver and painter and is a member of the snake clan with the Hopi people. He has been an artist since he was young painting on canvas ranging from small to large scale paintings. He mostly painted katsinas but also tried different types of genres like landscapes, people, animals, and spiritual influences.

Weaving is something he picked up by accident. Originally
Ahkima wasn’t interested in it until he was talked into it by family and friends in 2007. Since then, Ahkima has learned more styles of weaving extending to blankets and clothing.

Having showcased his artwork internationally, Ahkima’s work is recognized by collectors all over the world and has won multiple awards from various markets

Meet and watch them at work in the Grand Canyon's South Rim Visitor Center.

  • The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their handicrafts.

  • This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
