Description
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park invites the public to attend its annual symposium at Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities (also known as Pebble Hill) at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 10:00a.m. – 12:30p.m.
This year’s theme will focus on the Cherokee connection to the Creek War and will feature talks by Dr. Stuart Marshall, Dr. Steven Peach, and Dr. Susan Abram.
Dr. Marshall (Sewanee: The University of the South) will discuss Junaluska's experience in the Creek War and how he used memory of his military service to build an influential political career, resisting Removal and shaping the formation of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI).
Dr. Peach (Tarleton State University) will discuss why some Creeks pursued diplomacy with the United States during the Creek War.
Dr. Abrams (Western Carolina University) will discuss why the Cherokee chose to ally with the United States under Andrew Jackson and their contributions in the Creek War.
