South Rim: Desert View | Cultural Demonstrations by Renae and Chester Whiterock - Diné Silversmiths and Bead Workers.
Chester and Renae Whiterock - Diné Silversmiths and Bead Workers.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday — December 31, 2024, thriough January 2, 2025: 9 am to 4 pm each day.
- Chester and Renae Whiterock learned to bead and become silversmiths from family members. Their work is renowned for its intricate design and craftsmanship, featuring sterling silver, turquoise, and other gemstones.
- They carry on the rich legacy of Renae's great paternal grandfather, Béésh Ligai Atsidi (“Silversmith” in Navajo). He was a revered leader, Medicine Man, and the pioneer of silversmithing for the Dine’ people. His designs, deeply rooted in Navajo culture and surroundings, continue to inspire the work that Chester and Renae create.
- The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their craft and art.
- This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
