Description

After two months of fierce fighting on the island of Okinawa, the guns finally fell silent. Launched on April 1, 1945, Operation Iceberg, the invasion of Okinawa, was seen as a possible prelude to Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of the Japanese mainland. It became the largest and deadliest battle of the Pacific Theater in World War II.
