Description
While many think of Lincoln as the great emancipator and uniter, many more know him simply for his memorial. For as great of a leader, commander, and person as Lincoln was, his memorial quickly grew a life of its own. Starting with a dedication where the keynote speaker was forced to give a censored version of their speech, the memorial then became a stage for a performer to sing out against oppression, and the mere idea of protest at the site brought about positive change. This talk will explore how the memorial, a celebration of Lincoln, became a celebration of the America he helped create.
