Description

Join Park Rangers for specialty tours of Old Slater Mill in celebration of Labor Day. Take a deeper dive into the long and tenuous history of labor at the mill. These specialty tours are only being offered Labor Day weekend, so be sure to check out one, two, or all three tours. Note: these tours are replacing the normally scheduled Slater Mill Tours.

10:30 Tour: STRIKE!

Join Ranger Jillian Forrester as she investigates the history of America's first wage earners strike. Led by 102 women weavers working in Pawtucket, this strike lasted for over a week. Learn about the strike's lasting legacy.

12:30: Picture of a Factory Village

Hark! Do you hear the factory bell? Join Ranger Mark Mello for a tour that highlights those who worked at Slater Mill. Using Thomas Man's poem Picture of a Factory Village, we will investigate the harsh realities of life and work in Pawtucket as Thomas Man, a local critic, saw it.

2:30: The Men who Spun

Join Ranger Allison Horrocks for a deep dive into the Slater Mill's relationship with cotton. Investigate the lasting impacts of a simple plant, and how Slater Mill is intertwined with the slavery.
