Come aboard with 19th-century American seafaring families—wives and children included—as they traveled with captains on long merchant and whaling voyages. In New England seacoast towns, even young girls sometimes learned the mathematics of navigation, gaining practical skills before the age of STEM. And when storms threatened, one book stood above all others: Nathaniel Bowditch’s The Practical Navigator, the mariner’s essential guide.
