Description

It's time to celebrate! On June 21st, 2018, Petrified Forest National Park became an offical International Dark Sky Park. While the moon will be out this night, that doesn't mean we can't do some astronomy! Join us for a ranger-led program at 8 pm at the Painted Desert Inn, with telescope viewings and more until 10:30. For optimal astronomy viewing, we reccomend bringing a red-light flashlight or headlamp. Please no white light on the astronomy field. Access into the park will be limited to Painted Desert Inn and Kachina Point during this time. Restrooms are available at the Painted Desert Inn. There is no access to HWY-180 after normal park hours and no campgrounds are available in the park. For lodging and camping, we recommend our neighbor, the town of Holbrook, 25 miles west of the park. Due to monsoon season, the event may be canceled. Check our website or Facebook and Twitter feeds for up-to-date information. For your safety and the safety of your equipment, please do not bring your own telescope unless approved by the Petrified Forest Dark-Sky Ranger. Email jacob_holgerson@nps.gov or call 928-524-6228 for more event information or if you are interested in volunteering for one of our astronomy events.
