Return of the Eta Aquariids
May the Fourth be with you! Join us as we kick off our astronomy season here at Petrified Forest National Park with the "Return of the Eta Aquariids". Over the weekend, the Eta Aquariids meteor shower will be visible in spectacula fashion. What better place to watch than an International Dark Sky Park? A ranger-led program will begin at 7:30 pm at the Painted Desert Inn, followed by telescope viewings and more until 10pm. For optimal astronomy viewing, we reccomend bringing a red-light flashlight or headlamp. Please no white light on the astronomy field. Access into the park will be limited to Painted Desert Inn and Kachina Point during this time. Restrooms are available at the Painted Desert Inn. There is no access to HWY-180 after normal park hours and no campgrounds are available in the park. For lodging and camping, we recommend our neighbor, the town of Holbrook, 25 miles west of the park. Due to weather, the event may be canceled. Check our website or Facebook and Twitter feeds for up-to-date information. For your safety and the safety of your equipment, please do not bring your own telescope unless approved by the Petrified Forest Dark-Sky Ranger.
