160th Anniversary of the United States Colored Troops 36th Regiment Infantry raid at Popes Creek

In June of 1864, 475 men of the Thirty-sixth U. S. Colored Troops embarked into Westmoreland County and the Northern Neck of Virginia during the American Civil War. Their expedition began at Popes Creek, VA, near the site of George Washington’s birthplace. This week marks the 160th anniversary of the raid, which lasted from June 11th to the 21st.
 
Join special guest and park ranger Steward Henderson this Friday, June 21st, at 2:00 p.m. in the visitor center theater as he shares stories of the United States Colored Troops 36th Regiment Infantry.
