Juliet Miles: A Story of Courage and Sacrifice
Thirty Days of Stories on the Underground Railroad is a series of podcasts series created in celebration of September as International Underground Railroad Month. The Oldham County History Center is celebrating by recording a podcast story on the Underground Railroad to broadcast each day of September.
Juliet Miles: A Story of Courage and Sacrifice is read by Rachael Pasierowska, Ph.D. student at both Rice University and UNICAMP in Brazil with Interest in reducing modern forms of slavery and forced labor.
Juliet Miles and her son were emancipated by Rev. John G. Fee in 1851 and moved to Felicity, Ohio, sixteen miles from her enslaved family members in Kentucky. Juliet was arrested and captured on the banks of the Ohio River in an attempt to help her enslaved children and grandchildren in Kentucky. Her family was sold down river, and she was sentenced to three years in the Kentucky penitentiary where she died in prison after serving two years.
