Red Ash Hike
The many people who once called this gorge home during the mining days may be gone, but their history is still here. What people stories are left on the landscape to tell of this once bustling, industrial area? Join a ranger and hike to the old cemetery on Red Ash Island to discover rich tales of past communities.
Meet at the Brooklyn Trailhead near Cunard River Access. This mostly flat shaded hike will cover 3 miles roundtrip on a wide dirt trail. Some uneven terrain and a short amount of moderate, off-trail travel will be encountered to reach Red Ash Island. Good shoes, water, sunscreen, and insect repellant are recommended.

Location
The Southside Trail is located at the Brooklyn Trailhead near Cunard River Access and the Brooklyn Campground. A short portion of travel will be on a narrow, one lane two-way traffic road. There is limited parking at the trailhead. RVs and trailers are not recommended. From US 19, follow Route 16 south through the town of Fayetteville. Take a left on Gatewood Road towards Kaymoor and Cunard. Follow for 4.6 miles. Turn left at the sign for Cunard. Continue for 1.8 miles then turn left at both of the signs for Cunard River Access Road. Follow this road to the river access point at river level. Continue for one mile past the river access point until the maintained road ends at the trailhead.
