Description

Abraham Lincoln had a lifelong fascination with science and technology, a fascination that would help institutionalize science, win the Civil War, and propel the nation into the modern age. This presentation will preview how he obtained his scientific and technical knowledge, then encouraged the growth of a northern industry that allowed men to better their condition. But then we will focus on how Lincoln during the Civil War helped the North use its technological advantages to achieve Union victory while simultaneously putting the nation on a path of government-supported scientific research and technological investment. David J. Kent is the author of Lincoln: The Fire of Genius: How Abraham Lincoln’s Commitment to Science and Technology Helped Modernize America. He previously wrote Lincoln: The Man Who Saved America, as well as books on Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. As a scientist and historian, he brings a unique perspective to the study of Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War era, and the continuing struggle to form a more perfect Union.
