Description

Thirty Days of Stories on the Underground Railroad is a series of podcasts series created in celebration of September as International Underground Railroad Month. The Oldham County History Center is celebrating by recording a podcast story on the Underground Railroad to broadcast each day of September.

Lucy Higgs Nichols is read by Eileen Yanoviak, Executive Director of the Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, Indiana.

Lucy Higgs Nichols with her daughter, escaped slavery from Grays Creek, Tennessee, to a Union Army, thirty miles away, where Lucy served as a nurse for the 23rd Indiana Infantry.  She served the 23rd to New Albany, Indiana and then when the 23rd was furloughed, Lucy followed the Union Army, under General Sherman, and was present at every siege. After the war, she returned to New Albany where she spent the remainder of her life.
