Description

Thirty Days of Stories on the Underground Railroad is a series of podcasts series created in celebration of September as International Underground Railroad Month. The Oldham County History Center is celebrating by recording a podcast story on the Underground Railroad to broadcast each day of September.

Madison, Indiana and the Shallows is read by Vivian Jones-Wright, retired Oldham County Deputy Sheriff and volunteer for Oldham County Youth Football League.

Placed at an unusual section of the Ohio River, where shallow crossings were common, Madison became a point of flight for freedom seekers, who could disappear in the Black neighborhood of the Georgetown District.  The Neil’s Creek Anti-Slavery Society created a group of resistors who created the Eleutherian College as a place of haven for Black and White students.
